I feel like I’ve arrived in the motherland of cannabis!
I’m in Colorado for the week of 4/20 to network, report, and see what it’s like when adult use marijuana (aka recreational) is the norm. So far, I can tell you that I’ve seen three dispensaries with the iconic green signs after driving from the Denver airport last night to Green Mountain in Lakewood.
It’s where Ted and Amy live, the family friends of my mothers’ who have welcomed me into their home for my first night while my friends at The Marijuana Times arrive today.
My mission: to capture the 4/20 experience and compare marijuana life from the local and federal level. I plan to do that through comparing DC’s struggle for legalization and social use with Colorado’s extremely progressive cannabis laws. I’ll also be examining federal laws from the Colorado and Californian perspectives.
Today it’s snowing and 33 degrees. It’s going to get up to 80 degrees by Friday. Meanwhile, the home I’m staying in today is cannabis-free but Ted and Amy are not opposed to the plant. Ted is a former Kansas City police office and a Trump supporter. He’s smoked cannabis before, but a gram will last him weeks. By the way, he says a gram can go for up to $30 and the taxes are sky high — about 30 percent! My favorite story was his marijuana lollipop stash he made for a cruise with his wife. He swapped the regular wrappers for the marijuana ones and drew a dot on the bottom of the special ones.
Today I’m going to do a little sightseeing as I’m ten minutes away from the beautiful Red Rocks amphitheater and then I’ll be headed to Denver’s Magnolia hotel for the week.
PS – I’m currently close to 6,000 feet above sea level and honestly, who needs THC when the lack of oxygen in the air makes you feel loopy anyway!?!?!
More to come —
