It’s hard to say that something like this could take place anywhere other than the Sunshine State.
Malcolm Brenner, a 63-year old photographer makes the claim that he had a year-long sexual affair in 1971 with a dolphin named “Dolly” in a new 15-minute documentary called Dolphin Lover.
In the documentary, Brenner gives a blow-by-blow (pun intended) account of his torrid affair with Dolly at a Sarasota, FL theme park where he was given access to the park’s dolphins, however, not with the intentions of having sex with them.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Brenner claims that the “relationship” was not his idea, but rather, Dolly made the first moves, essentially “seducing” him.
“I was given free access to the dolphins and I became friends with her by going swimming with her. She was very special. She announced her intentions to me by positioning herself so I was rubbing against her. At first I discouraged her, I wasn’t interested. After some time I thought ‘if this was a woman would I come up with these rationalizations and excuses’? It was when the park was closing that we successfully eluded the male dolphin so we could spend some time alone.”
According to Brenner, he called it a relationship because, to him, that’s what it was. More importantly, he looked at the experience as “transcendental”. Brenner previously chronicled his fling with Dolly in a book titled, Wet Goddess, because these sorts of things simply can’t be made up.
Of course this isn’t the first time there’s been reports of monkey business dolphin style: Dolphin researcher Margaret Howe would recount how she had what she called a “sexual relationship” with a dolphin she was studying in 1965. Her story was featured in the BBC’s The Girl Who Talked to Dolphins, which aired last year.
While it’s easy to discount both stories as plain bestiality, it has been said that Dolphins have a heightened intelligence, and as mammals, not fish, they share many things with human beings, so these things, while pretty weird, aren’t outside the realm of possibility. However, the choice to indulge in such things, well…that’s another story altogether.
In the case of Malcolm Brenner, his dalliance with a dolphin wasn’t his first rodeo with the animal world. Brenner, who’s twice married, is a professed zoophile who admits to also having a sexual relationship…with a dog.
An interesting footnote is that in each relationship, both dolphins ended up dying soon after the affairs came to an end, with both dolphins allegedly committing suicide. Both Howe and Brenner claim that in each situation, it was as a result of the dolphins “suffering from a broken heart.”
So there’s that.
