Now I know Christians are a forgiving, understanding people, but clearly there’s a sucker born-again every day.
Case in point: a high school sophomore named Charity Stevens was arrested Tuesday after it was discovered that not only was that not her actual name, but that she was actually 31 years old.
Charity Anne Johnson (real name) was booked on charges of failure to identify/giving false, fictitious information. The charges stem from her enrollment in New Life Christian School (how apropos) in Longview, TX. According to a school spokesperson, Johnson enrolled in October 2013, giving a date of birth that indicated she was 15. On Tuesday, staff at the school discovered her identification was fake.
Well, no shit.
Johnson approached a Longview woman by the name of Tamica Lincoln, who bought Johnson’s sob story of homelessness, and agreed to take her in.
“I sympathized with her, and invited her into my home. I took her in as a child, did her hair, got her clothes and shoes…I just don’t know why she did it. Why put yourself and others at risk to do something like this?” she wonders. “I have deep concerns about her being who we don’t know she is, and then she’s out there at the school.”
Clearly, Lincoln wasn’t concerned enough to figure out she had an adult stranger pretending to be a child live under her roof. Lincoln vouched for Charity as her guardian and even met with Charity’s 10th grade teachers at New Life Christian School.
At some point (seven whole months later), Lincoln and a friend became suspicious about Johnson’s identity, so they decided to call police and head to the school. In an effort to cover their sanctified asses, school officials are sending notices home with their students today, informing parents of the issue.
For her part, Lincoln has reached out to a number of people who know Johnson via Facebook. Apparently none of them seem to want anything to do with Charity Johnson, giving the impression that she’s a con woman, who they believe should go to jail due to “all the hurt she’s caused.” Johnson is currently being held on $500 bond, which might be too rich for the blood of a high school sophomore.
Clearly the Lord works in mysterious ways, so mysterious that some of his followers can’t even tell the difference between someone who’s 15 and someone who’s 31.
